Solving the Cloud Migration Challenge Enterprise Pain Point Offers Opportunity for Providers

Jan 18, 2017

Enterprise IT organizations struggle to migrate data and applications to the cloud. In the most recent Frost & Sullivan Cloud User Survey, migration is among the top ranked challenges that constrain IT from moving workloads to the cloud, cited by 57% of IT decision-makers.

The challenges can be traced to many sources. Large datasets may run into bandwidth capacity constraints. Moving the data may require untenable amounts of business disruption. Datasets may not be in the correct format for the cloud service they are being ingested into. Furthermore, migration involves more than the physical movement of the data or workload. Enterprises must ensure data is mapped to the appropriate workloads during or after migration—a process that is typically handled manually, consuming considerable time and resources.

Migration—whether of data or workloads—remains a key constraint that prevents enterprises from adopting cloud computing services within their IT departments. Despite automation advances in many areas of cloud computing, migrating data is often still a customized service using professional services or similar vendor teams to ensure success.

Though this area of cloud services lags in terms of evolution, some providers are advancing tools and services to help automate the migration process. Such tools span different facets of the migration process, however, and many providers use a combination of free tools, automated services, and personalized professional support in order to achieve a successful data migration.

To date, few providers have created a comprehensive, end-to end cloud migration service that is cloud-neutral and can assist in every aspect of the data migration process—from data and application interdependency mapping to replication and data cleansing, to encryption and compression, finally leading to the final movement and re-mapping of applications and data within the target environment. This is a clear market gap, and one that will continue to be a pain point for enterprise IT. Providers that can capitalize on this market gap by creating an end-to-end, cloud-agnostic solution for automating data migration will open a door to new opportunities in the cloud services business.
